It is sad to know that most of the Papamū used for Kōnane are lost, destroyed or stolen from their place of rest. Many are hidden from view under vegetation or over turned by development. This Papamū is located on the Westside of the Island of Kauai. I don't know if it was made in ancient times or a recent creation.
These Papamū have always such a powerful expression when viewed and admired.
If this is ancient, then just image the games played and the wagers won as two players tested their skills.
If it is new, then who made it and do they still play?
Papamū are connections to the past. This is a piece of Hawaiian culture that is lost, but not forgotten. They wait for a time when they once again become the center of attention.
